Maintaining a calm and confident frame of mind during tough economic times can be very challenging. Your spouse may have lost a job. Your job’s hours may have been downsized. Or your roof started leaking and your transmission on your car went ka plooey and all on the same day. Maybe your kid wants to buy that latest wii wii thing and it’s just not in your budget.

And the politicians just can not do anything fast enough to stop you from worrying about your life’s savings going down the drain. Early retirement, college funds for kids all seem like a dream  from the past, not in today’s new reality of a failing economy.

How do you maintain that cool and calm frame?  Well, it’s not as easy and quick as reading an article with a few tips and techniques. I started on the path to obtaining peace of mind about fifteen years ago and let me tell you, even with all the classes, reading and introspective work I have done on myself, it is still a daily, moment to moment challenge to not let it all get to my center of calm.

I find myself doing a lot of internal self-talk, in the moment as people are talking to me and events are unfolding trying to rattle my cage.  I tell myself things like, “don’t take it personal, this person blows up around everyone.” Or I say to myself, “ this crazy thing has happened before and you recovered. It was OK after time.” This one is good, “take a few deep breaths and think about something else.”

Right now you might ask what is working the best for me? It is The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. I have the Four Agreements displayed on my wall at work and I have The Four Agreement cards sitting on my desk so I can remind myself that I am an enlightened, calm person and that I can deal with anything!

The Four Agreements is an easy to read book for almost any age. Don Miguel offers us examples from everyday life and how to cope. He shares the knowledge of his culture that was passed on in his family, the ancient Toltec wisdom of the native people of Southern Mexico. He wrote The Four Agreements (published in 1997), The Mastery of Love (1999), The Four Agreements Companion Book (2000), and Prayers (2001). All are worth having in your self-growth and spiritual library for you will find yourself rereading these classics on a daily basis.

Start now. Here are The Four Agreements. Read the book and apply these to your daily life for some peace of mind during troubling times.

Be impeccable with your word – Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Don’t take anything personally – Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

Don’t make assumptions – Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Always do your best – Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

After a while you will find that you have memorized these agreements and when the daily stuff happens you start using the agreements as your own calming self talk. I have found that agreement one about  refraining from gossipping and spreading poison is very challenging because it is an American pasttime to gossip.

But it can be done.  And you may even find yourself sharing the agreements with friends.  So make an agreement with a friend not to gossip about others. What will you talk about?

These are just a few techniques, not the whole answer for you personally, but its a place to start. Isn’t that what life is all about? Helping each other? Pass it on. What is working for you right now?

Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman

One of the most amazing books I have read and re read is Dan Millman’s Way of the Peaceful Warrior which was also made into a movie a few years ago.

When I first heard of this book, it was named  as a top ten read by a close friend and then  another friend of mine lent his copy to me and told me I had to read it. So as a commitment to presenting top notch material that has influenced me on this blog, I am now re reading this  story about a person on the path to success and on a spiritual journey of a lifetime.

Angelheart’s Blog is about my search and your search for a peaceful and meaninglful life. I would like to share my own explorations, successes and failures in the search for a meaningful life. And I would love for others to comment on what has and has not worked for them.

One of my favorite authors is Dan Millman. His book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, inspired me and helped to change my life. Has anyone read this metaphysical classic or seen the movie?

One of Dan Millman’s other books is about the ancient art of numerology. It is titled, The Life You Were Born to Live: A Guide to Finding Your Life Purpose.

My numerological number is 26/8, the same as Dan Millman’s and one of my life’s goals has always been to find inner peace and happiness and to help others achieve their own inner peace and  life purpose as well. Read this book and you will be amazed at your own life purpose and you will read about  great ideas to achieve it!
